Pepsi’s New Logo: Friend or Foe?

Over the past few months, Pepsi went crazy with redesigning logos for all their products. I’m not just talking about the logo for the Pepsi brand. They’ve redone almost all of their brands. A little trivia for you. Pepsi also owns Gatorade, Tropicana, Sierra Mist, and Mountain Dew. All of these brands have been re-branded too! Allow me to take you for a little tour of what Pepsi has been up to.

In my opinion, Pepsi did a great job with redesigning their logos for Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Pepsi Max. Proof of this lies in the fact that the first time I saw a friend carrying around that new Pepsi 20 oz. bottle, my immediate thoughts were, “I need to buy one of those!” It wasn’t the same Pepsi that I had grown up with. It was new. It was exciting. It looked great. Think about it. How crazy does this sound? I’ve tasted Pepsi before. I already know what it tastes like. Pepsi hadn’t changed anything about the taste of their product. But just the mere changing of a label made me excited about the brand. I wanted to go out right then and there, and get one for myself!

Some people are upset about Pepsi’s decision, but isn’t this what Pepsi has always been about? Their number one competitor, Coca-Cola, has always represented tradition, whereas Pepsi has taken the opposite positioning. Pepsi positions itself as a new and exciting brand that is hip and cool. When Coke said “Always Coca-Cola,” Pepsi said “Generation Next.” Pepsi needs to continue to innovate and rejuvenate their brand. They can’t keep being the same brand that they were five or ten years ago. Why? Because it’s who they are. The Pepsi brand is all about innovation and change. Some people might be hating on your new logo, Pepsi, but I’m all for it!

Take a look at the evolution of Pepsi’s logos over the years. Get ready for a stroll down memory lane.
