The New New Gatorade

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Not too long ago Gatorade did some re-branding and the bottles ended up looking like this:

gatorade_pepsico_new_packaging_2009Overall I think they are pretty cool bottles, but without memorizing which catchphrase goes to which type of Gatorade it was a bit difficult to pick the one you want on the fly.  The simple G-bottle was definitely my favorite of the bunch.

Now Gatorade is already planning some more changes.  Sales and market share both dropped a significant amount during this re-brand and the campaign that went along with it.  Gatorade seems to be planning on continuing with their plans, just adding something new.

They want to advertise to a broader audience and they believe that the ‘What is G?” may have been focused to strongly on athletes.  On the flip side their new products are going to be more serious sports drinks.  They are going to be releasing a pre-workout drink and an after-workout drink with whey protein.

I think these new drinks will be a good idea instead of just adding new flavors.  Let’s be honest here, a lot of Gatorade flavors are hard to tell apart.  With these new drinks they can really focus on the sports market… let’s just hope their advertising doesn’t drop the ‘athlete’ vibe too much when these products are released.

Pepsi’s New Logo: Friend or Foe?

Friday, December 11th, 2009
Over the past few months, Pepsi went crazy with redesigning logos for all their products. I’m not just talking about the logo for the Pepsi brand. They’ve redone almost all of their brands. A little trivia for you. Pepsi also owns Gatorade, Tropicana, Sierra Mist, and Mountain Dew. All of these brands have been re-branded too! Allow me to take you for a little tour of what Pepsi has been up to.

In my opinion, Pepsi did a great job with redesigning their logos for Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Pepsi Max. Proof of this lies in the fact that the first time I saw a friend carrying around that new Pepsi 20 oz. bottle, my immediate thoughts were, “I need to buy one of those!” It wasn’t the same Pepsi that I had grown up with. It was new. It was exciting. It looked great. Think about it. How crazy does this sound? I’ve tasted Pepsi before. I already know what it tastes like. Pepsi hadn’t changed anything about the taste of their product. But just the mere changing of a label made me excited about the brand. I wanted to go out right then and there, and get one for myself!

Some people are upset about Pepsi’s decision, but isn’t this what Pepsi has always been about? Their number one competitor, Coca-Cola, has always represented tradition, whereas Pepsi has taken the opposite positioning. Pepsi positions itself as a new and exciting brand that is hip and cool. When Coke said “Always Coca-Cola,” Pepsi said “Generation Next.” Pepsi needs to continue to innovate and rejuvenate their brand. They can’t keep being the same brand that they were five or ten years ago. Why? Because it’s who they are. The Pepsi brand is all about innovation and change. Some people might be hating on your new logo, Pepsi, but I’m all for it!

Take a look at the evolution of Pepsi’s logos over the years. Get ready for a stroll down memory lane.

No Pizza in the Hut?

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Word is beginning to spread that Pizza Hut plans on changing its name to “The Hut.” And why not? Everyone else is doing it. Puff Daddy changed his name to P. Diddy, Jennifer Lopez became J-Lo, and Kentucky Fried Chicken re-branded as KFC. Even Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. Nowadays, shorter is better.

According to Brian Niccol, Pizza Hut’s Chief Marketing Officer, “Pizza Hut is not changing its name,” but “We do use ‘The Hut’ in some of our marketing efforts.” A recent restaurant opening in Jacksonville, Florida carries both logos at the store. For now, it’s safe to assume that “The Hut” is just some usual test-marketing and that they are just playing around with the name to see if it works.

Alright, well here are my thoughts:

  • The word “hut,” by definition, doesn’t sound very appetizing: It can be defined as “a small or humble dwelling of simple construction, esp. one made of natural materials, as of logs or grass.” Mmmm…nothing like thinking of logs and grass while chomping on my pizza. If Pizza Hut is trying to become more sophisticated by adding pasta dishes and sandwiches, why go with a name so primitive as “The Hut?”
  • Taking pizza out of the hut: Isn’t pizza what they’re all about? OK maybe they’re trying to re-brand and to be known for more than just pizza, but let’s be honest, people aren’t exactly going crazy over the new pasta dishes. Pizza is what Pizza Hut is all about. At least keep it in the logo.
  • FedEx: This company did an awesome job with changing their name. They used to be called Federal Express. It took too long to say. FedEx just sounded better. All of their customers called them FedEx anyway, so why not change the name? As far as I know, people aren’t currently calling Pizza Hut “The Hut.” It will probably just get laughed at.
  • Jabba the Hutt: OK, I had to say it. Don’t act like you weren’t thinking it too. I can just see Youtubers and bloggers having a field day with this one. Associating your food with a 500 pound evil alien that slobbers isn’t exactly a positive brand association. Han Solo said it nicely when he described Jabba as a “slimy piece of worm-ridden filth.” You don’t want your customers thinking that you’ll turn into the same thing after eating at your restaurant.
